Complete Record: 1) New Jersey- the manufacturing of ductile iron. Scientists and metallurgists conduct experiments on iron that has been strengthened with various alloys. Heavy machinery tests the strength of the iron by breaking, bending and twisting it. Scientists in starched white shirts stare up at an enlarged projection of irons’ molecular make-up before and after being mixed with alloys. Great shot of cast ductile iron parts being rolled off a conveyor. A man drives a tractor with parts made from the new iron alloy. Intertitles: “A message to you from industry “Very cold and sterile looking clinic with female nurses conducting routine health evaluations on male patients. Arizona- Mesquite farmers harvest wood to be turned into coal. Farmers transporting wood from wheelbarrows and mule- driven wagons to an apartment-sized kiln. One worker lights the kiln. Two others heft bags of mesquite out of the kiln. Workers pour hot mesquite into a metal trough and break it apart with hammers. Cut to happy nuclear family grilling mesquite steaks and prancing around on an outdoor lawn on the coast. Kansas-A Minute Maid Frozen Juice truck pulls into a cold storage facility built in a limestone cave. Men on a dollies transport frozen stock from one area of the facility to the another. Man with a large thermometer hangs it on a tower of frozen goods to help regulate temperature. Exterior shots of storage facility. Multiple shots of assembly workers on the line, women at work stations, men building refrigerator parts. Ohio-A boy places his hand on a sensor on the window of a hobby shop in which there is a train that runs when it is powered by the electricity conducted through the boy’s hand. The hobby shop owner builds a remote controlled freighter in his shop, then takes it out on a lake along with a couple other prototypes. He and the boy sail the remote controlled boats together. 2) Boys in full football regalia play outside a modest American home. One of them breaks a window. An angry man runs out of the house yelling at them to find out which one of them did it. Great shot of the man shaking his fist in anger through the broken window. One of the boys is made to call the window manufacturer to get the window replaced. Cute scene of the boy on the phone, helmet askew , while on the other end of the phone. Windowman smiles. Boy shows up at the plant in a business suit, carrying the infamous football. Windowman gives football boy a tour of the manufacturing plant. Boy is taken around plant and shown how new windows are made. Men and women construct window frames in front of the boy. Windowman poses next to one of the new windows and mugs for the camera. Intertitles: ’A message to you from industry’ Cars piled up on the freeway. Cars congesting city streets. Cut to a couple having breakfast at their kitchen table, the wife pours coffee for her husband from a shiny chrome coffeepot. Cut to coffeepot manufacturing plant. Gorgeous shots of every step of the manufacturing process. Laborers, mostly women, install percolators, buff the chrome pots, test to make sure the pots heat the water to the correct temperature etc. Intertitles: “Sawmaker for the World” Old men at a desk play with saws.
