another here at the paraplegics manufacturing company incorporated but don't get the idea that this is some sort of charitable organization the firm turns out electronic parts strictly for profit and since the first year of its existence has operated consistently in the black president white guilfoyle discusses a contract with one of the large electronics manufacturers for whom Pam Cole produces parts then he takes the visitor on a tour of the plant where he points out that his firm holds its own solely on the competitive basis of quality and price never sympathy similarly employees earn their salaries their paychecks are in no way a handout the profit motive is working out for these people as no amount of charity ever could this man is assembling a transistor unit for a telephone switchboard Western Electric Admiral and Stuart Warner are just a few of the well-known companies for which the firm does subcontracting work not bad for a small outfit in business less than five years disabilities of employees come from many causes accidents illness and war wounds are the most common [Music] workbenches in the plant have had to be set at a height to accommodate wheelchairs and ramps replay stairways but otherwise the factory isn't much different from any other plant engaged in the same type of work industry generally has been recognizing this fact in recent years and is putting to good use the formerly wasted talents of the handicapped and what this has meant to people like polio victim a Langille can hardly be expressed in words [Music] his family's home food and clothing bought with the proceeds of his labor what that means to a man cannot be put into mere language [Music] nearly every American family can now afford an automobile a radio and television set a refrigerator and washing machine because of American managerial experience in know how improved machines and techniques plus the millions of skilled men and women and the production lines in the nation's plants and factories all of us have come to consider yesterday's luxuries as today's necessities and our industrial progress continues each year American industry spends two and a half billion dollars on research to improve current products or to invent new ones [Music] from farms of the surrounding dairy country fresh whole milk arrives at a processing plant in Sturgis Michigan as each candies emptied samples are taken to determine purity weight and butter fat content after the milk and cream have been separated and pasteurized they go their different ways to be converted into any of a number of dry products turned out here at M and R Dietetic laboratories incorporated cream for example after being fortified with milk sugar and minerals derived from milk is heated and piped into vacuum condensers in which hot air pulls most of the water out of the cream operators run frequent tests on the percentage of moisture still left in cream being processed and when that percentage gets down to the proper level the cream is sprayed through 20 nozzles into this huge drying chamber which takes out the rest of the water and completes the job of transforming the cream into powder all the stainless steel pipes tanks and other equipment in the plant are kept scrupulously clean at all times you might wonder why they don't just bottle the whole cream and sell it as is instead of going to all the trouble of converting it into powder the reason is that there's a big market for it in this form thanks largely to its economy and convenience and it took the firm 12 years of research and experimentation before they were able to supply that market just a couple of years after the product was perfected it flows out in a steady stream to all parts of the world mostly to homes of course but a great quantity that all saw to places where fresh cream would be difficult to obtain or could not be kept refrigerated or as needed only in limited quantities with powdered cream you use just the amount you need and the rest stays fresh almost indefinitely stir it up the missing liquid element is restored and there's the quickest easiest cup of coffee ever here's a plant in Spokane that's threatening to burst at the seams although that's the last thing in the world you could say about the product it turns out for what they make here at aluminum Supply Company is welded aluminum pipe used primarily for sprinkler irrigation on farms and it's their pride that the seams are the strongest part of the pipe the process of making pipe by bending an arrows sheet of aluminum into a tube and welding the two edges together begins with a thorough cleaning after that the metal is heated and fed through a series of rollers that gradually shape it into a continuous cylinder each succeeding roller is a little more curved than the preceding one so that finally the edges meet and are automatically welded the machinery being used was almost all built right here for when these people started welding aluminum pipe the process was practically unheard of only a couple of years ago virtually all aluminum pipe was extruded pressed out through a die now the two methods are highly competitive every length of pipe produced is submerged in water and subjected to air pressure of 350 pounds per square inch if it passes this test its ready to be shipped to distributors like Western oilfield Supply Company in Bakersfield California which happens to manufacture its own fittings for the pipe here for example molten aluminum is poured into a mold to form a coupling that will be used to join two lengths of pipe together after the part has cooled excess metal will be trimmed off and it will be used with other fittings and with the pipe of course to create a sprinkler irrigation system that can be easily broken down and moved to a new location by one man working alone if necessary those are the principal advantages of aluminum strength lightweight and also corrosion resistance and they are advantages which literally have caused deserts to blue as here in the San Joaquin Valley which under natural conditions would be a Dust Bowl but with irrigation is one of the most productive agricultural areas on earth water is scarce here in many cases wells have to be sunk 500 feet to tap it consequently water is expensive and by sprinkling rather than using irrigation ditches a gallon of water goes twice as far the benefits of industrial research reach us from a great many different directions in the past as America's population has grown its natural resources developed new industries came into being more and more people invested their savings in plant tools and machines this in turn permitted employees in industrial plants to increase their output through the use of mechanical power newer and faster machines as well as better production techniques when the assembly line was introduced it brought with it better testing and inspecting methods these not only permitted the employees to increase their output but enable them to improve the quality of goods they turned out in their wages and standard of living continued to climb [Music] next time you're in a men's clothing store look around and observe the revolution that's taken place in the buying of socks shirts ties even suits and overcoats don't notice anything different well that's probably because you've got used to it but about 80% of all men's clothes are purchased these days by women it's standard procedure now in most homes for the little lady to make the major policy decisions in these matters we males have our own excuses of course we're too busy we're not that interested in clothes or whatnot but the fact remains that we've relinquished the job of covering our backs to the distaff side of the family oh yes hubby will have to come in to see how the suit fits but he needn't kid himself this suit is as good as sold to him [Applause] here's a philadelphia men's clothing firm h dare orphan sons incorporated that was among the first to recognize the change in buying habits and do something about it when survey showed what was happening mr. who purchase the materials they need why shouldn't a family do the same and let the lady of the house be the purchasing agent this woman insists she doesn't buy her husband's suits she just pre shops to narrow the field and save the lord of the manor time and trouble regardless of who buys the suit guess who decided which one to buy [Music] three in 1975 after that they will set about preparing a accomplishments will not come automatically Americain shows also what this wonderful tomorrow will require of us if it is to be realized investment of savings in the tools of production expanded educational facilities an atmosphere of economic political and religious freedom if we continue to grow in all these ways this young boys trip through outer space will someday be real rather than just imaginary [Music] over the years industry has made great progress in establishing a plant environment which recognizes the importance and dignity of the employee as an individual the highest level of steady work can pay for better health and safety protection benefit programs to safeguard him and his family opportunities for education and training these are just a few of the human relations advances which have given the employee a greater sense of satisfaction and security on the job the turn of the century back in the hills Pop's been complaining about a crick in the neck and more has just the thing to fix it Russian oil a new importation from abroad something the Russians really did develop by refining crude petroleum in the years to follow this product is to be improved upon by American oil scientists and applied to so many new uses that today the crude distillate used in its manufacture fills acres of storage tanks at petrolia Pennsylvania the oil produced here at El sana born sons Incorporated is no longer called Russian oil after losing that name it was called white oil for a while because of its water whiteness and now is more commonly known as mineral oil some of the tanks contain solvents and chemicals used in the purification of the distillate to convert it into pure mineral oil [Applause] distillate and acid are mixed and inside a closed system of pipes and tanks there begins a series of chemical reactions which in about two weeks time will produce mineral oil with a degree of purity never before nor during the process the acid is separated off of course along with all other undesirable elements to make sure of the purity samples of every batch turned out are brought to the laboratory for dozens of painstaking analysis one sample is tested with acid if the sample were not pure the acid together with heat and agitation would cause it to turn dark another sample colored with dye for greater visibility is tested for viscosity the rate at which it flows out of the bog tells the story every batch of oil is custom-made for a specific customer in spite of the laboratories extensive equipment there's one test for which no satisfactory machine has yet been invented taste and smell this must still be handled by the human senses these experts operate much like coffee tea or wine tasters except that they are looking for absolutely no taste and no aroma whatever finally the perfectly clear oil is approved for shipment to a wide range of industries for use in cosmetics pharmaceuticals manufacturing operations and chemical processing or to be bottled and sold directly to consumers for a great many uses in the home here's a home in which mineral oil is being used as the chief ingredient in the baby oil that keeps little Davey's skin clear there have been a lot of changes in mineral oil during the past half century in its quality and its applications but the first use it was put to is still one of its biggest and best just ask Davy [Music] here's a bustling st. Louis company founded on an idea conceived by a GI during World War two an idea for providing a much-needed service for the nation's motorists the GI a man named Lee hunter came out of the army gathered some capital and set this organization in operation under the corporate title of hunter engineering company the product turned out by hunter is a device for balancing automobile wheels many thousands of motorists are troubled by vibration or shimmy caused by the fact that one or more of their wheels are out of balance that is the weight of the wheel is not uniformly distributed around its entire circumference the effect is the same as if the axle were slightly off-center let's see how the balancer corrects that situation both front wheels are raised two inches off the floor and a spinner is set in motion to bring the suspected wheel to any desired speed up to a hundred miles an hour or more yes that wheel is definitely out of balance [Music] the hubcap comes off and in its place an adapter is installed this will hold an instrument that will literally tune in on the wheels vibrations determine how much counterbalancing weight is required and point to the exact spot where it should be placed in days gone by a wheel in need of balancing had to be removed from the car and submitted to endless trial and error which sorely tested the patience of mechanics now a few knobs are adjusted and when the vibration stops the problem has been laid [Music] two ounces of weight go there through such inventions hours of tedious labor are eliminated the job is done better and costs to the car owner are drastically reduced it rides once more like a brand new car not a bad idea Lee hunter had back in his army days good thing he had the engineering background and business savvy to follow through with it the entire American system rolls on competition with the customer in the driver's seat the customer chooses among many competing products he buys from the company that offers him highest quality at lowest price to keep customers happy a company must become more and more efficient find new machines methods and processes and reduced production costs it must pass savings along to customers in the form of reduced prices and improved quality a company can grow or stay small but in the final analysis it's the customer who decides how big a company can grow [Music] we visit a school at Stuart Nevada in which teaching six and seven-year-old youngsters how to tell time is something of a problem since many of them have never before laid eyes on a clock the school is the Carson Indian school which strives to impart an education to children who are handicapped by the fact that although they are descendants of the original Americans they are also the least assimilated element in our population the task therefore is to bring their living habits and conditions into line with those of the rest of our citizens learning here is a little more complicated than it might be elsewhere complicated by total unfamiliarity with such commonplace items as silverware or napkins much less their proper placement and usage [Music] so in addition to the 3 R's the school fills in the children's background with subjects that will enable them to adapt themselves to life outside the reservation like the preparation of foods long shunned or not available in Indian villages and the advantages of modern medicine the increased vigor and longevity that are possible through observance of the rules of Health and hygiene not only are there cuts and bruises attended to but they also are indoctrinated with established principles of nutrition sanitation and the other requirements of good living in this school Indian children today are being taught nothing about leatherworking bead stringing and the other quaint hand crafts that prove so interesting to tourists but which helped bind the Indian to his ancient past instead its auto repairs and other industrial skills that will enable the young man or woman to find a useful place in our twentieth century society it was the high degree of our industrial development that brought the rest of us the advantages of health long life mass education improved living standards and all the rest let's try applying the same solution to the problems of the American Indians with a working knowledge of industrial techniques their chances of lifting themselves out of their present unhappy condition strictly through their own efforts should be much improved [Music]
