Description: Traces the energy outputs and inputs of a large electric power plant from the coal to the produced electric energy. The law of conservation of energy and of random and orderly motion are demonstrated. Begins with coal arriving on the barge and shows its preparation for the furnaces heating the boiler. Each part of the generation station is explained on a blackboard diagram before the step-by-step analysis begins. Starts by making a fuel analysis in terms of combustion products and BTUs. The burning fuel expends most of its energy heating the water but some is lost "up the stack." Condensing the "spent" steam loses over half the available BTU. The remaining energy losses occur in the generator and in transmitting power to the homes., Energy traced from coal to electrical output in a large power plant; quantitative data taken in the plant; conservation law demonstrated for random and orderly motion.
