Material is selected to show the various ways that tongue and lips are used in order to contrast the principal syllable types of Peking Chinese. X-ray techniques show the articulatory process and acoustic output of native speakers, prepared scripts, consisting mainly of short, meaningful utterances, illustrate selected phonetic features. Speakers were chosen both for linguistic suitability and lack of physical characteristics that might interfere with X-ray quality. From the X-Ray Film series
