Description: Examines standard colloquial Damascan, the ordinary conversational speech of educated male Muslims. Material is selected to illustrate the contrast between plain and "emphatic" or pharyngealized consonant positions, as far as possible by means of minimal pairs. X-ray techniques show the articulatory process and acoustic output of native speakers; prepared scripts consisting mainly of short, meaningful utterances illustrate selected phonetic features. Speakers were chosen both for linguistic suitability and lack of physical characteristics that might interfere with X-ray quality.
