In 1873 the nation was just beginning to recover from a financial collapse and the cattleman found himself with added woes. While the demand for western beef was increasing, the rangy longhorn was no longer regarded as a choice animal for marketing. The ranchers had to move fast, improve the breed, hold on to the market, and expand sales. As the breed improved, the vast grassland ranges became overstocked and with the drought of 1883, which wiped out half of the cattle in Texas, cattlemen suffered severe losses throughout the Great Plains. By 1885, cattlemen threw their stock on the market at any price.
