Documents the adventures of Lewis and Clark, Pike, Long, Fremont, Bridges, Colter, and Powell, among others, who explored the wilderness west of the Alleghenies. Indicates that most felt the land west of the Alleghenies was uninhabitable except by Indians. Shows that only through the explorations of frontiersmen was the West opened to settlement.
