[Music] so suppose right now someone were to ask you this question where are more workers hurt at work or away from work what would you say here's the answer away from work yes more than twice as many persons are killed at home or in traffic or on vacation than are killed on the job but you know accidents don't have to happen the things you do at work to keep from getting hurt you can also do away from work but say how'd you like to see how good you are at safety in a safety game it's called what's wrong with this picture we have some pictures here three sets on home safety recreation safety and traffic safety but first of all let's take a sample quiz picture for trial run to see how this game is played now in this picture there are three errors your time limit 12 seconds each is a common error but serious enough to cause injury can you find them remember you're looking for three safety errors time's up here are the answers number one these pot handles should be turned in so nobody can tip them over and be scalded second error is this grease don't take a chance on falls make sure that spill liquids are wiped up right away this curtain is error three flammable material near an open flame or heat can cause a fire remember tie curtains back or shorten now these errors were easy yet such little things cause serious burns and falls and now for the quiz home safety is our first subject and since most accidents happen inside the home that's where we'll start all set three errors here time limit 12 seconds let's go here's the first using a makeshift arrangement for a ladder a quick way to reach the floor get the right equipment a good sturdy ladder then use it correctly second error someone could easily trip over this bottleneck wiring besides too many wires can overload a line even cause a fire here's number three slipping on a roller skate might look funny but sprains and broken bones are no joke toys and other small objects don't be long on the floor now let's go to picture number two four errors here time limit 14 seconds ready yes here's the first error putting hot ashes in a wooden basket it's a sure-fire stunt and so is this secondary this littered floor but fire isn't the only hazard a fall down here can be just as serious as anywhere else keep all floors cleaned up here's our third error a gas water heater without a proper flu this could cause asphyxiation or an explosion finally error four is this poker leaning against the wall children especially might be hurt if it falls such too should be hung on hooks out of everyone's way well safety experts how did you score now let's see if your chances are any better outside the house can you find three errors here time limit 11 seconds you ready go well here's the first error this man can't see where he's going his view is completely cut off it's safer to carry less make another trip these cluttered stairs are the second error stairs are no place to keep things like bottles and cans that is if you want to keep on your feet third error the handrail that isn't here all steps should have a handrail it's safer that way especially with children three errors again time limit 10 seconds let's go here's number one this man is really headed for a fall he's leaning too far over and can easily lose his balance error two children and fires don't mix almost every year hundreds of boys and girls are burned to death by fire and here's number three yard and garden tools left around to fall over put them away it's better for the tools and safer for everyone yes these are all good safety pointers during the quiz did you notice what most of these hazards might lead to falls that's right falls have been killing more than fifteen thousand people in the home every year yet many falls like this can be prevented stairs for example should be kept in good repair with a strong handrail and they should be well lighted small throw rugs can also cause bad falls they are especially dangerous on wax floors linoleum with curled edges can trip you up better to fix it before it fixes you then there's ice and snow that can let you down in a hurry yet we all know that cinders or ashes on icy walks will prevent falls calcium chloride or rock salt will do the same trick we can fix curled or loose ends of linoleum it's easy just trim them and tack or cement them down and we can stop a rug from slipping with a rubber mat like this one little things yes but they make your home a safe one now for recreation safety our second group this time three sports pictures there's one error in each time limit five seconds each let's run through the series first and then come back all set next one more now let's see the errors this first error standing up in a boat is mighty dangerous so is overcrowding don't take chances if you're only a dry dock sailor stay on the pier number two this joker is out to end his hunting trip with a bang a gun should never be carried through a fence be smart and be safe break your gun and put it through the fence ahead of you error three this man out of condition shouldn't exercise so strenuously if you're not used to playing hard take it easy weekend athletes don't live long yes these are just some of the things that kill and thousands of persons but again you don't have to take these chances you can prevent accidents and you can still enjoy yourself you wouldn't swim right after eating or swim out too far when you do go in yet every year several thousand persons drown because they forget simple rules like these just once now for traffic safety our last series of quiz pictures before we start let's remember that speeding is the most frequently reported violation in accident deaths right behind speeding our failure to give the right of way alcohol driving on the wrong side of the road and improper passing about 30 000 persons are killed every year in traffic accidents how can we cut down this figure this traffic quiz might tell us here in this picture are three errors time limit 13 seconds to find them ready here's the first pulling out from a parking space without signaling but just putting your hand out isn't enough look around make sure it's safe second error is this man walking out from between parked cars a good many pedestrians who try this land in the hospital or the cemetery this third error is common following hard on the heels of the car ahead give yourself plenty of room you may need it keep one car length away from the other car for each 10 miles per hour speed ready for another traffic picture there are three errors here time limit 10 seconds go here's the first error this man cutting across the street now he might save a few seconds might catch the bus but he might also have an accident perhaps pay with his life error too this stunt of walking in front of a bus or street car wait on the side an extra second or two for a clear view in both directions this woman is committing error number three with her umbrella like that she can't see anything so be alert always for a long happy life okay now there's two errors in this picture time limit nine seconds first error is this man walking on the wrong side of the road keep on the left side to see oncoming cars at night carry something right so they can see you second error getting out on the street side of the car why take a chance on getting side swept why take chances at all okay let's try for another two errors time limit 10 seconds ready yes first error is this driver crossing the tracks before the train has hardly passed he's really sticking his neck out he can't see if another train is coming on the other tracks secondary this man taking a shortcut across the tracks he might think he's safe but every year trains kill about 1 000 persons who don't belong on the tracks now for the last traffic group three pictures one error in each time limit five seconds each we'll go right through them and then come back ready okay next now for the errors first one is this car about to pass never pass on a curve or a hill a lot of drivers make their exit this way second error ignoring this stop sign don't hurry to be killed traffic signs are for your protection why not follow them this third error was easy a left turn from the right hand lane play safe move into the proper lane before you reach the intersection well how was your score if it was high you probably know and follow the few simple rules of traffic safety for example let the other fella know what you're going to do always expect the unexpected be especially alert at night and when it's raining or icy keep your car under control obey traffic signs drive at a safe speed and always remember when you're a driver look out for the crazy pedestrians when you're a pedestrian look out for the crazy drivers now the things you've seen in this film aren't new but they're still mighty important so when you leave work today remember accidents can happen anywhere anytime will they happen it's up to you the safety of yourself and your family is in your hands [Music] you
