Description: This film, made in Galilee by a Nazareth-born Arab, uses the events surrounding a wedding as an allegory for the complex interrelationships of Palestinians and Israelis in the era of occupation. A mukhtar or village patriarch desires to celebrate his son's marriage according to tradition. The Israeli official in charge of the area, fearing violence, initially refuses his request but relents when his female assistant proposes that the wedding take place if they are invited as guests of honor. In this microcosm of Middle Eastern life, the ironies and contradictions of the political situation blend with the richness and sensuality of the ritual celebrations. As wedding preparations begin, tensions mount as each participant confronts his personal politics. (Circulates)
