A portrait of the American composer and music critic which reflects his life and prolific career. Thomson reminisces about Paris in the 1920's, his friendship with Gertrude Stein and his collaboration with her on Four Saints in Three Acts. He also discusses his musical contributions to the social documentary in The Plow That Broke the Plains, The River and others.
