Description: "USAF News Review No. 3" is jam packed with USAF forces and munitions; it features a number of innovations underway in air force equipment and air crafts the early 1950's. This USAF promotional film includes a number of ADC (Air Data Computer) pilots from the California Air Force base situated in Oxnard. ADC pilots are capable of determining aircrafts altitude and air speed. The film also includes men of the 437 Fighter/Interceptor Squadron, the F-94 Starfire and the XC-99. It tours a number of air force bases; Moody Air Force Base located in Lowndes County, Georgia and the Joint Base in San Antonio. Moody AFB; opened in 1941, was named after the late major general George Putnam Moody; an army air craft test pilot who perished in May of 1941. Oxnard AFB; closed since January of 1970 has a brief but rich history. The base was established in 1942 at the start of the Second World War. During WW2, the 36th Training Wing supervised contractors training pilots at the airfield. The pilot waves from the cockpit (1:10). The F-94 pushes off (1:23) for a runway take off (1:38). Bombs spill out (1:45). Controllers operate controls from the ground base (1:52); the radar screen traces planes to interception with planned targets. The target is sighted (2:00) and rounds are fired. The film goes to Missouri Whiteman Air Force Base (2:22) for a chart making class. Whiteman; originally opened in 1942 as Sedalia Glider Base. Technicians at the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center; ACIC (2:30) work to compile air facility data for pilots. This base was later renamed the DMA Aerospace Station following incorporation into the DMA. Close shots watch mountain ridges etched onto maps (2:51). Complex printing equipment (3:27) produces charts rapidly. A technician pulls completed charts from the rack (3:39). At the Air Force Flight Test Center in California; the Edwards AFB, (3:54) two hangars are prepared for transit across the Mojave Desert. The job required expansion into the desert wasteland (4:21) calling for a decision to either move the hangars or reconstruct them. A two billion dollar saving encouraged the decision to move the hangars. The trans grid is pictured (4:27). The hangar pulls forward (4:55). Air Force trainees in Texas swarm over the Joint Base in San Antonio (5:09). 60 acres of scale model planes (5:17). Troops man a gun turret in a sand bagged parking area (5:19). Student officers and NCO’s lead basic training; soldier's lay belly flat and squeeze off blank rounds (5:22). At the time about 81000 and 12000 student officers were undertaking the basic training course (6:20). The silver nosed F-84F (6:34) is used for several droppable wheel tests. Wheels run behind (6:43). Slow motion footage show auxiliary wheels dropping off after takeoff and bouncing the runway (6:53) for about a mile. Technicians fashion a small parachute into a standard wheel on the ground (7:05). Narration explains the droppable feature became necessary for retracting gear for modern thin winged air craft (7:17). The feature also enables weight saving, the F84 climbs to higher altitudes (7:24). Wheels are released and the parachute explodes (7:27) dropping to the dirt. The XC 99 (7:52) breaks records in the next segment. This was the cargo version of the B-36. The XC 99 was a prototype heavy cargo AC hitting top speeds of 300 mph. In 1950, it flew as part of Operation Elephant and saw much use during the Korean War. First flight was 1937. Technicians perform preflight checks (8:02) within the massive craft. A portion of a cargo load is exampled (8:15). It broke 21 national records (8:22) as it lifted a payload weighing 100,400 lbs. It spins on roller skate landing gear (8:34). just for Air Force Flyers but for members of all the military services there are no hard fast rules for preparing charts advances in modern aircraft constantly impose new requirements each expert at huge hangers must be moving moved a distance of 2 mi across the Mojave Desert increased research and development activity necessitated the move supersonic aircraft made existing runways obsolete rocket missile and Armament experiments required larger test areas expanding into the desert Wasteland provided the answer Air Force officials were faced with the alternative of moving the hangers intact or building new ones the move could be accomplished at at a saving of $2 million over the cost of new construction moving a structure of this size is an exacting operation every stress and strain must be predicted and counteracted the building's structural soundness must not be weakened expanding Air Force research activity creates new challenges solving them economically as part of the Air Force mission Air Force basic trainees swarm over revetments of a mock Airfield at Lackland Air Force Base Texas they are learning fundamentals of Airbase defense the air Drome includes 60 Acres of scale model planes sandbagged parking areas ramps and runways harmless blanks and smoke grenades are substituted for live ammunition unusual helmets distinguish aggressor forces is besieging the air Drome Defenders are attempting to hold them back until friendly reinforcements can be brought up situations similar to this during the Korean conflict demonstrated the importance of training men in fundamentals of Airbase defense regardless of their primary job three mock skirmishes are staged each week [Music] the basic Airmen are led by student officers and ncos who gain experience in defense advanced fighter designs call for a way to relieve landing gear stress during takeoff from rough air strips under heavy loads an f84 was used to test several droppable takeoff Wheel Systems released at takeoff or from minimum altitude slow motion photography showed how auxiliary Wheels bounced or rolled for a mile or more during early experiments as a probable solution Air Force Engineers mounted a small parachute in a standard [Music] wheel limited space for retracted landing gear and modern thin wied aircraft makes the droppable feature necessary weight saving is also a cargo its log shows better than 5600 hours flying time more than any other experimental plane in history cargo capacity is tremendous this is just part of an average load 21 International records were broken when the silver giant lifted a single payload of 104,000 a routine load is about £80,000 lb some flights have lasted 29 hours a roller skate landing gear permits the xc99 to operate from any
