e [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is Titan the Air Force's largest ICBM now in late stages of testing at Cape canabo Titan's first launch was in February 1959 and since early 1960 it has been making icvm range flights down the Atlantic Missile Range August 1960 proved a busy month for Aerospace activities this 5,000 m Titan and Atlas flew 7,000 Mi the X15 set new speed and altitude records and later in this news review we'll see the launch of satellite echo1 and recovery of discoverers 13 and 14 early on the morning of August 10th 1960 technicians ready a Thor Delta rocket which will send a new breed of Earth satellite into orbit it's the Air Force supported nasad directed echo1 communication satellite echo1 an aluminum covered plastic balloon is stored in the Rocket's nose cone and will inflate to 100 ft in diameter when it achieves its orbit 1,000 m above the Earth radio signals from widely separated Earth stations may be bounced from the 100t sphere in space [Music] Prime stations in New Jersey and California as well as numerous intermediate stations around the world have successfully communicated using the echo as a sounding board in space this message is being transmitted from the Rome air Development Center Trinidad test site to Rome New York via echo1 as an InterContinental space communication test brazaville the French equatorial African city across the Congo from leopoldville seat of political unrest in the troubled New Republic of Congo the United States Air Force in response to United Nations requests at 132 cargo type aircraft in operation within a week alling and evacuating European and American refugees from the threatened dangers in this troubled area of the African continent Air Force planes from the states and from the United States Air Forces in Europe carried in troops from Ghana Morocco Tunisia Guinea and Swedish troops on duty with the UN force in the Gaza Strip troops trucks Communications equipment and food going in refugees coming up American refugees mostly missionaries are landed at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington the quick response to emergencies like the Congo have become routine to this nation's strategic airlift Force experience gained in the Berlin airlift the Lebanon crisis of 58 the Moroccan and Chilean earthquakes and Matt's combat exercise big Slam in early 1960 have conditioned our airlift Force to operate quickly and efficiently whenever and wherever the need may arise it's been almost a year since the news review did a story on the QB 47 then it was making remotely controlled flights but with a crew aboard to supervis the system now at Egan Air Force Base the QB 47 is flying unmanned and missions in support of the bowar interceptor missile program with ground instruments fed by radio signals from the 47 and with aircraft controls working in response to signals from the ground this q47 is about to make its first unmanned flight [Music] once in the air a t33 director aircraft takes over and guides this huge drone on its assigned Target Mission d33 then leaves the 47 on its own and Far Below a bowmark is launched under control of the sage air defense system the bowmark guided to a realistic Target image such as the QB 47 performs well as can be seen in these pictures taken from a camera mounted on the Drone the bowar makes a planned near Miss well within range of an actual Warhead with a proximity FES the QB 47 a valuable tool in the development of a long range bowmark [Music] kler Air Force base near buuy has long been the basic Electronics instruction center for the Air Force here in conventional classroom instruction Airmen are learning information which will help them in technical Fields such as missiles Radar Fire Control Systems and the like when one student asks a question all others must wait while the instructor gives the answer with a new method of instruction currently being tested at kler faster students may find they can progress at their own speed and those who are having a tough time can get the extra help needed it's made possible by a machine called the autotutor the autotutor is a composite of electronic and mechanical components that presents material to the student in picture form examines him on each point and requires him to demonstrate understanding before it will pass on to the next point when a student comes up with a wrong answer the machine will tell the student what he did wrong and review the material until he comes up with demonstrated understanding and the right answer then he may go on to the next problem this means of instruction coupled with laboratory equipment in the classroom for practical study should help the student develop more quickly than by conventional teaching methods the autotutor combined with trained instructors to give guidance and to evaluate the students performance May provide new teaching methods to supply the Air Force with more proficient technicians in shorter time and at less cost to the taxpayer the Smithsonian institution recently added this nation's first intercontinental ballistic missile to its National Air museum in Washington the 80ft tall Atlas joins a long list of Aviation memorabilia which marks an amazing growth from the wri brothers 1903 bip plane to the globe spanning missiles of today Air Force Chief of Staff General Thomas White here's Air Force secretary Dudley sharp present the atlas to the institution in an impressive ceremony attended by many government and Military dignitaries Mrs Goddard wife of the late Dr Robert Goddard father of modern rocketry receives a medal in honor of her husband's work which led to the development of rockets like the atlas Dr Goddard fired his first liquid rocket in 1926 and as a captured German V2 scientist said during interrogation in 1945 ask your own Robert Goddard we learned about Rockets from him belated tribute to a man now honored in the National Air Museum from the headquarters of Strategic Air Command near Omaha comes the direction for the free world's largest deterrent Force three stories under this building is the sack command post where the famous red telephone can be used to play the entire force on Alert in an instant this alert force is heading for an Airborne command post one of the many backup precautions sack has taken to assure the proper direction of the Strategic Force of AIR research and development command Lieutenant General Bernard Shri gets a close look at the Air Force satellite Discoverer 13 recovered from the Waters of the Pacific after 18 revolutions around the earth the capsule recovered from the ocean by helicopter was brought to Washington for study and display since it is the first orbital body to be recovered from space just a little more than a week following the recovery of Discoverer 13 another accomplishment of even greater magnetude was to be achieved c119 of the 65 93rd test Squadron were standing by over the Pacific to snatch Discoverer 14 from the air as it parachuted back to Earth from space a large trapz likee loop snags the capsule's parachute canopy as the plane passes over it it's almost like catching a marble dropped from the Washington Monument into a [Music] teacup the capsule is reeled aboard the aircraft and placed in a canister for shipment to the Air Force ballistic missile division for further study this crew is rightly proud of its distinction of having been the first to snatch an Earth satellite right from the air at Hickam Air Force Base General em O'Donnell Awards the distinguished flying cross to the aircraft commander and the air metal to the crew of The Recovery aircraft the air metal also went to the photographer who filmed the actual recovery of discover 14 it's a happy occasion for the friends and families of these proud Air Force men with each new dramatic achievement the Air Force strengthens its goal of Aeros space power or peace
