Towards a Modern Europe

Uses animated maps, artwork, and live photography to outline the movements and conditions that prepared Europe for modernity. Examines the revolution in men's thinking; Martin Luther's protestations against the Roman Catholic Church; the exploration of the oceans and the discovery of the New World; new conflicts in Spain, England, and France, and the Thirty Years War; and how the extravagance of Louis XIV and a succession of bad harvests pushed France's war-weakened society to the brink of revolution.
