In this deceptively simple tale, an elderly couple journeys to Tokyo where they are received less than enthusiastically by their offspring. Generational conflicts are halted momentarily by death, but a sense of alienation is apparent. The film reveals lyrically and poignantly the Japanese concept of mono no aware -- the pathos of events and its acceptance as part of a fateful existence.
