THE PAUSE THAT REFRESHES

Website:

Originally made to be shown in movie theaters in New Castle, Indiana in the late 1930s / early 1940s, these wonderful ads promote the "delightfully refreshing" Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola officially introduced the iconic slogan heard in these ads, "The Pause that Refreshes" in 1929. Developed as a shift from earlier, more literal phrasing like "Pause and refresh yourself," this slogan became one of the brand's most successful, long-running advertising campaigns, emphasizing a relaxing break from the busy, daily grind. At the time that these ads were made, refrigerators were becoming a mainsay of American households, so the ads promote having Coke at home. (Most American homes had refrigerators by the late 1940s and early 1950s, with widespread adoption taking off after WWII.)
