Description: This first feature by the Sankofa collective experiments with narrative forms to present a multi-layered commentary on racism, sexism, homophobia, police brutality and the decline of industrial society in Thatcher's England. In allegorical sequences set on an arid landscape, She and He, black activists, debate the issues with the woman accusing the man of phallocentrism and self-absorption. The lived experience is represented by Maggie, a young British-born West Indian grappling with contemporary realities in a working-class environment. Cohering these various strands is documentary footage of protest demonstrations. (Does not circulate).
