The Lover's exile

In this fanciful adaptation of Monzaemon Chikamatsu's classic Japanese drama, Bunraku puppeteers breathe life into the story of Chubei and Umegawa, a messenger boy and a prostitute, in a traditional tale of temptation and tragedy. The film is narrated by a jouri, or storyteller, accompanied by a samisen player who responds musically to the extraordinary talent of master puppeteer Tamao Yoshida. (Circulates)
