The outing of a simple Parisian family results in the amorous escapades of its beautiful daughter and convivial mother with two young blades. Set in the 1880's, the film forms an interlude in Renoir's career and illustrates a return to the sources of his inspiration in the landscape in which he grew up and in French literature. It reveals the filmmaker's relationship not only to his father, Auguste Renoir, but also to other Impressionist artists.
