A cinematic letter to a Japanese woman, Koumiko Muraoko, whom Marker met in Japan during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. His film is an exploration of Japan and a portrait of Koumiko. Marker's camera picks up Koumiko at the stadium and follows her through Tokyo's streets and shops. His voice on the soundtrack probes and frames questions for her to answer. Koumiko reveals her personal history as a Japanese born in Manchuria; how she feels about being Japanese; what she thinks of the Japanese infatuation with Western styles and customs.
