Description: In an expression of international solidarity, 40,000 volunteers went to fight against the armies of Hitler, Mussolini and Franco in the Spanish Civil War. This film features eleven American veterans, members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, who describe their idealism and wartime experiences as soldiers, ambulance drivers and nurses. Set against the background of the Great Depression and the rise of fascism, the film uses archival footage and contemporary interviews to raise the issues of private and collective responsibility.
