The Best of Families, No. 5: Chill to the Bones

The deepening recession of 1893 finds the lives of the three families touching but not intertwining at Morton House, the first settlement house for the poor. The Wheelers tour the new facility, Sarah Lathrop arrives to take photos, and the Raffertys celebrate a birthday. The nation's precarious financial situation has become a full-scale depression and bread lines, soup kitchens, and work programs are instituted.
