Description: Banned during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the art of stilt dancing has now been revived. Against a background of indigenous music, the camera records the preparations for a village festival as the performers dress to portray characters from myth, history and village life. Performances in the village square range from a traditional butterfly dance to an original satire on the Gang of Four. Filmed without interpreters or officials, the documentary captures the people with informality and spontaneity.
