Description: A Southern black woman, Octavia, is forced to raise her two sons, James and Ty, alone when her husband is drafted into the Army. In order to support the family all three work on a tenant farm. One day Octavia has to bring James to the dentist in the city. James soon realizes that there is a vast difference between being a poor black and a rich white. His mother's handling of some difficult situations causes him to see her in a new light. Based on a story by Ernest J. Gaines. From the American Short Story Series SERIES.
