Description: Chevrolet’s 1956 short film, "On Top of the World," produced by Jam Handy, follows six 1957 pre-production Chevrolet Task-Force models as they make the grueling trip from GM’s Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan to Fairbanks, Alaska, and back. The six Chevrolet trucks demonstrate their durability and performance as they tackle the formidable ALCAN highway. The six Task-Force trucks—a 1957 Chevrolet ½-ton Cameo Carrier Pickup, a 1957 Chevrolet 1-ton Panel, a 1957 Chevrolet Dump Truck, a 1957 Chevrolet Van Panel LCF (low cab forward), a 1957 Chevrolet 5-speed transmission Tractor Trailer, and a 1957 Chevrolet Tractor Trailer Powermatic—depart Milford for the AAA-supervised test (01:05). They reach Dawson Creek where the trucks are weighed and certified by AAA (01:38). The trucks travel hundreds and hundreds of miles, over rivers, up mountain sides, and along challenging dirt roads, only stopping for refueling under AAA supervision (05:02). As they drive along the ALCAN highway, they pass into the Yukon and the town of White Horse (05:24) before finally reaching Fairbanks, Alaska (06:11). The Task-Force trucks then start their journey home. The Dump Truck (07:25) and the ½-ton Cameo Carrier (08:46) are highlighted on the trip back to GM’s Proving Ground. The Chevrolet Task Force was Chevrolet's successor to the Advance Design trucks. The Task Force Series ran from late 1955 (second series) through 1959. At GMC locations, it was called the Blue Chip Series. The 1955 second series offered standard options and add-ons such as 12-volt electrical systems, the first V8 (the 265 cubic inch), and fleet-side six-, seven-, and eight-foot length beds.

roads that deal out shaking twisting crushing blows every mile of the way until at last the six trucks roll into Fairbanks Alaska the end of the spectacular continuous run from Dawson Creek between Dawson Creek and Fairbanks Alaska stretch 1,523 of the roughest toughest miles in the world six Chevrolet trucks started this special run and six trucks finished in the astounding time of 44 hours 45 minutes 25 seconds all under 45 hours a Time far less than usually reported By Truckers operating over this rugged Alcan Highway Fairbanks the halfway mark in the grueling road test from Milford Michigan and still more punishing miles lie ahead on the return stretch to The Proving Ground and here they come this dramatic demonstration of Chevrolet truck performance on the Alcan Highway tested All Phases of Truck design as they have never been tested before for example driving ease in the big trucks equipped with palamatic Chevrolet's exclusive heavyduty automatic transmission in a truly outstanding performance this truck with Power Matic thundered along the entire length of the Alcan taking mountains in stride through treacherous washouts in a single forward speed range the only reason for shifting it all was in starting from neutral or backing up and the performance of the 1957 truck engines over the road where trucks grow old before their time amazed drivers and AAA observers alike in a special test the thrift Master 6 and the tradem V8 cover the entire 1,523 Mi stretch without once being shut off even for refueling in a superb performance demonstration the new 283 cubic in Taskmaster V8 displayed tremendous torque and Reserve power flattening the steepest grades with ease and maintaining constant cruising speeds regardless of the road and ruggedness of the terrain and despite the worst the Alcan had to offer fuel economy over this exhausting route was exceptional this 1/2 ton Cameo carrier averaged more than 18 m per gallon even though the engine in this truck was kept idling during routine stops and was not shut off during the run and any one of the 1957 Chevrolet task force models light medium or heavy duty will deliver the same premium performance that whipped the Alcan Highway think of what all this means to truck operators All Over America Alan proved on this toughest of natural Proving [Music] Grounds and that's the dramatic story of how the 1957 Chevrolet task force trucks conquered the Alcan Highway in a grueling 10,000m test of truck stamina and performance with only minor roadside repairs made and not one truck turned back or dropped out yes the 19 57 Chevrolet task force trucks are truly the champions in every weight [Music] class
