NIAGARA ON WHEELS

Year Published: 1950

Creator: Jam Handy Organization

Format: 16mm

Description: Made by the famed Jam Handy Organization for Chevy, this black & white film promotes Chevrolet's new innovation: the automatic powerglide transmission. The film focuses on the transmission's design, ease of use and touts the torque it provides. The film attempts to explain the mechanical and hydraulic action of the automatic transmission, by metaphorically comparing it to the power of Niagara Falls -- thus the title "Niagara on Wheels". Copyright 1950. The Powerglide is a two-speed automatic transmission designed by General Motors. It was available primarily on Chevrolet from January 1950

globetrotters Honeymooners visitors of all sorts of stood on this prick awed by the power of Niagara Falls man has learned to harness and use this power and the great water turbines that drive the electric generators are a part of the engineering experience that has gone into the most modern form of power transmission this is chevrolet's new automatic power team first let's see what it does when you drive a chevrolet with the new automatic power team all you do is move the pilot control lever to D step on the gas and you're away smoothly swiftly with a torrent of power under velvet control here with Chevrolet's new 105 horsepower valve and head engine new power glide automatic transmission and new high reduction rear axle is a team that gives you amazing performance and all this great performance with great new driver comfort a truly fatigued less rhyme with new freedom from the mechanical details of driving no clutch pedal to push no gears to shift the result of more than 10 years of Chevrolet and General Motors engineering development remember it's the twisting force of the engine that turns the wheels of the car and it takes more twisting power for starting or on a grade than for moving on the level with a conventional drive shifting gears are used to multiply the twisting power of the engine Chevrolet engineers set out to eliminate the abrupt surges of power as gears changed they wanted to eliminate the friction clutch and clutch pedal in fact after years of design and test they found a way to eliminate entirely the mechanical connection between engine and rear wheels and that's where Niagara Falls comes in at Niagara water with all the energy gathered in its long plunge over the balls drives the giant turbines so smoothly that there's no perceptible vibration to use this principle in a motor car we need some sort of pump that will move lots of fluid in a hurry the engineers selected a type called a centrifugal pump to see how it works let's start with a paddle pump arrangement and glass balls to represent drops of water when we spin the pump centrifugal force throws the drops outward with considerable force with a cup shaped like this all the drops will be thrown away from the pump in the same direction now another cup shaped wheel with veins in it just like the pump it's called a turban because it has a different job to do will mount the turban facing the pump when we spin the pump centrifugal force throws the drops outward our super slow drop strikes a turban vein and starts to push it around it keeps on pushing as it goes down the spiral path to the center the pump can be connected to a power plant and the turbine connected to drive the rear wheels of our model will enclose the units so that fluid can be used over and over again in action the pump whirls the fluid around until it shoots out to strike the turbine blade the fluid pushes the turbine blades around then goes back to the pump over and over faster and faster until engine and wheels are turning smoothly at practically the same speed this is a simple fluid coupling which requires a clutch and a gear transmission to multiply power but Chevrolet engineers were looking for a way to multiply the power of the engine for starting accelerating and climbing hills without using gears they found the answer in fluid power multiplication to see how power multiplication works let's go back to our for slow drop remember the drop pushes the turbine blades then returns to the pump traveling with considerable speed why not use the power of this moving drop to give us the power multiplication we want here's the way it's done first a set of vanes here changes the direction of the returning flow so that it will travel in the same direction as the pump and actually help the pump blade talk more fluid this arrangement of vanes is called a stator and here's the rest of the magic answer notice that each turbine vane narrows at its inner end forcing the fluid to spurt out with tremendously increased speed just as water spurts much faster from a garden hose when the end is partly closed by your finger or a nozzle the added force traveling in the right direction gives added push to the oil in the pump so that more and more oil is pumped to the turban this gives a power multiplication of more than two to one in your Chevrolet the multiplication is greatest when you need it most for starting passing a car or for climbing hills let's see why this is when the turbine is standing still or turning slowly the fluid from the pump is free to enter the turban pass down the center of the turban and then return back to the prompt as the flow is bent by the stator veins and directed back to the pump there is a large multiplication of power as the turban picks up speed the whole mass of fluid begins to turn now since everything is moving in the right direction the stator veins are no longer needed to change the course of flow in fact they would be in the way Chevrolet takes care of this by mounting the stator vein so that when they're not needed they revolve freely with the moving oil of course this changeover takes place gradually so that the power multiplication is cut down gradually when the pump and turban are at approximately the speed the power transfer from engine to rear wheels is straight through like conventional hi and there is the secret of Chevrolet's power multiplication the stators are locked when you need power multiplication the stator turns freely with the whole mass of fluid when you're cruising on the level niagara falls on wheels combining age-old engineering experience in the use of moving fluid to drive a wheel 80 years of improvements in turbines more than 10 years experience in the big general motors bus 10 years of testing improving in great military tanks here today is a perfected mechanism the pump capable of pumping more than a barrel of oil each second the turban with veins skillfully shape to take the fullest advantage of the oils twisting force and instead of just one stator there are two plus a secondary pump for greater efficiency and smoother better performance and here's another exclusive feature these paddle wheels in the hollow section of pump and turban when the car is on a downgrade or the accelerator is released so that the turban tries to turn faster than the pump the turban paddles throw oil against the pump paddles this action ties the units together slows down the turban and provides engine braking eliminating all freewheeling these units all sealed in a leak proof housing operate not in water but in oil to cushion the starting loads in smooth out engine vibrations for normal straight ahead driving this is all we would ever need but since the flow of oil cannot be reversed a reverse gear is mounted here along with a low low gear for emergency these gears are called planetary gears because they do not actually shift instead the outer gear is clamped by a band operated by hydraulic pressure to back up just move the pilot control lever to our and feed the gas but we're starting power far above normal is required move the selector lever to L the automatic transmission alone almost doubles the starting power supplied by the engine and you have a lower than low almost doubled again in power and multiplication and here's another plus when the pilot control lever is placed at park your car is locked against any movement locked because a toothed lever meshes with teeth in the gear drum that is always connected to the rear wheels in test after test chevrolet's new Power Team proves itself watch in Drive position how does perfected balanced team evenly without pause or vibration or jerk climbs right up and over that curve that's power and teamwork this is a twenty-seven percent grade it's steep but look at that acceleration here it is just touching 20 miles per hour and the driver takes his foot from the gas watch him he's not touching the brake back down he begins to roll now the gas is applied again and the car stops then on it goes easily smoothly effortlessly and over the top over the top with a Niagara of power on wheels the velvety power of fluid motion oil moving faster than the plunging waters at the base of Niagara Falls chevrolet's new 105 horsepower valve and head engine has been specifically designed for this great performance team the most powerful in the low price field and with new hydraulic valve lifters it is a miracle of quietness and with all its incredible performance this power team makes possible traditional Chevrolet economy at cruising speeds on the highway chevrolet's new automatic power team engine transmission and economizer high reduction rear axle give added economy and an overdrive result because your engine turns ten percent fewer revolutions than a car with conventional drive so smooth and so quiet yet so dramatic on the getaway that you have to experience it to believe it and this new experience in driving is brought to you first in the low-priced field by Chevrolet again pioneering in a sensational advanced to bring you the best in motoring at lowest cost
