10-year-old Susan Yee is a Chinese-Canadian girl who lives in Montreal. In this portrait, cameras follow Susan to French and gym classes in her multi-ethnic school. After school, Susan helps her mother and grandmother earn extra money by making jewelry boxes. Her grandmother reminisces about the old days when many families lived on their street. In 1972, however, the city embarked on an urban renewal project which displaced most of the residents. Susan's father once owned a laundry but now works as a cook in a Chinese restaurant. He fears that Chinatown will be completely demolished to make way for modern office buildings. Susan goes shopping with her mother at a Chinese grocery and later has fun sleigh riding with friends on Mont Royale.
