This film portrays the harrowing story of the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany and its persecution of the Jews. Set in a fictionalized Cologne betwen 1925 and 1942, it is told in the first person by a boy who joins the Hitler Youth Movement. His narration is accompanied by iconographic images from the novel. The story focuses on his perception of Friedrich, a Jewish boy of the same age, and the increasing persecution of Friedrich and his family by the Nazis. The film re-creates the Nazis' rise to power by interweaving archival footage with the testimony of former Hitler Youth members, Jewish refugees and readings from the novel by the author.
