i've only worn it a couple times um i think statistically the divorce rate among police is apparently quite high i don't know what it is but i've heard that and i don't have the problems most police wives have and i think one of the reasons is that when you have one member of a family working crazy hours getting involved in a real um unpleasant side of life it's very difficult to understand that from the outside i cleaned it just the other day okay right after i went to the range i suppose i worry somewhat but not very much really about her safety i i feel that she's confident i feel that she can handle herself field department has so many policemen now that help is always is always around so with that kind of help i really don't worry about her her safety on the street very much the parents guidelines insist that we have our hair above our collar most of us think it looks pretty funny but there's one good reason for it and that's it it gives somebody less to grab a hold of you have a lot of long hair hanging down i guess you could get a pretty good tug on it i thought i'd do the housewife thing for a little while and was home exactly a month when my husband suggested i got hooked for a job because i didn't look happy and he was right i'm really much happier out of the home working and it gives me a good feeling of independence i um there's nothing really enjoyable about feeling dependent on other people and fortunately most of the resistance i get i don't get directly so i don't really have to confront it you know every day i come to work i don't have people um walk at my authority to me most of the resistance i have to face tends to be theoretical get involved a lot of conversations with people who don't like the idea of women's sergeants or don't like the idea of women on control but so far no one has come to me and attacked me personally the thing that's been the real hard thing is more the sort of nagging [Music] awareness that someone's always looking at me because everybody does have a view and those that think it's a good idea waiting for me to prove that it works those things allow the idea waiting for me to prove that it allows the idea and and that sort of nagging pressure on me gets me down good daddy you've got several here um salami and taylor sir okay this is a notice from uh homicide section any officer having knowledge of a subject known as blue is a negro male 18 to 22 years dark complexion one view of police work particularly in the past has been that it's a very physical job requiring a lot of fighting for that style of police work physical strength and size is very important but i think there's another school of thought that particularly with modern technology and psychology being used you don't always have to fight pay attention to roll call be [Music] the women go through the same physical fitness course we go through and they have the same qualifications for the service revolver they're handicapped because most the women are issued a two inch revolver in other words the barrel is only two inches long which makes actual accuracy of the uh revolver a lot less than that of a four inch revolver it's a lot easier to put a two inch revolver in a handbag than it is in a four inch revolver a woman would rather talk than fight any day i believe you know or so some men just like to fight my personal opinion i'd rather fight a man and a woman and i feel it the same way on the street they'll a per a man will think twice before he hits a woman you know or he wouldn't he wouldn't have any uh second thoughts of hitting a man i think the woman's gonna have to take the responsibility of watching out for herself i mean you watch out for your partner regardless of she's male female or in between the walking 94 93's area ingram 1800 to 2030 and arbor gas when you pick up you know you you uh i mean i've been brought up you know you look out for women my fear is that uh uh someday one of these uh policewoman's gonna hurt somebody gonna shoot somebody the public may feel well look women uh they don't belong in police work look what this woman did this person be alive now if this woman hadn't been on the police department and it may set back women's lib a policeman is often afraid to work with a woman because he's afraid of his for his own safety and for hers and i think now some of our women are as physically fit as the men they are very strong but i'm talking of the average woman who is not i really think it's an excuse that the men make because they just don't like to work with women though they do uh they do carry their excuse on through in that they rate the policewomen on their how much they sort of get into the to the scuffle when the scuffle occurs [Music] [Music] uh the reason they resist having police women working with them or some of them do uh it's the same reason that they wouldn't feel right if the women came into their favorite bar and uh and tried to join in with the guys it's a sort of the male it's a male profession it's the camaraderie of of the men uh together uh sort of the somewhat salacious and uh it's the roll call it's it's a it's a military it has a military uh kind of i think uh women cramp their style my wife is more or less naive you know she just couldn't make it on the force and it i think it takes a certain certain type of woman to uh actually fit into the actual duties of a police officer i think women are very effective and i think you have to weigh this effectiveness to a degree i think that it's a case a typical case of men trying to hold on to the last male strong stronghold i think women have moved in into every phase of um job opportunity and i think that male police officers and i've had a lot of plaque from a lot of friends fellow people about it i think they are they're uh trying to hold on to that last frontier today's woman is sort of destroying the image that the man had i'm like being the home type the kids and always being helpless and so forth and i think some men take it as an attack upon the manhood or something the ego deflated or something but uh interest me as much and never really imagined myself as a mother i mean that that whole idea is rather awesome to me you know i at this point sort of assume that at some point i will be a mother but i'm certainly not going to hurry it i i really have some doubts as to whether i would enjoy the mother thing full time i just have always done things on my own and i think to to to lose that kind of identity of doing something that's yours i think would really um destroy me i think adding policemen to the force really forces a lot of other issues that modern police departments have been toying with all along one of them is what kind of respect the community should have for the police force and i think now we're really going to have to gain community respect by the the fairness of our enforcement and by the speed of our response to their their needs and by the efficiency with which we solve crime and and handle situations rather than um control by a sort of fear of physical abuse perhaps women aren't creating this need that didn't ever exist before i think the department um has wanted to make some of these changes anyway i think that the hardest thing was that that not only were many of the men against me but a great many of the women were against me too there were just a handful of women on the department at the time when the whole patrol project began that really wanted to see it work for women in order to get equality you end up taking away a great many privileges and one of them is protection and special treat a lot of the questions that policemen ask me about my job i get the feeling that they're sort of comparing what i say with what they hear their wives say and i wonder sometimes if some of these policemen have have enough room in their heads to have lots of different categories for different types of women i sometimes fear that they're faced with the problem of either having to reject their wise role if their wife is one who does not work and it was a housewife either having to reject her role to accept yours or to reject yours to accept hers you know obviously women can be all kinds of things they can be housewives they can be working they can fit in all kinds of categories but but i think so often a man shapes his ideas about women on the base of the women that are close to him and if his mother didn't work if his wife doesn't work he may be quite hostile to a policewoman who wants to work and if he finally comes around to accepting her he may not feel that his wife is you know doing a proper thing and i think that's wrong i think that we of course should get to the point where we can sort of all do our own thing [Music] no throw all right now one million keep your butt straighten your body straighten your body look i don't know just right where you are just squat right down look like like this just go down yeah well that's what i i just want to roll now get it with everything you got right here and bend over no you're bringing it yeah more from more guttful from the stomach just concentrate on one thing this fist is recovered to a okay [Applause] you
