A radical film version of Schoenberg's opera. Straub utilizes minimalistic camera techniques to capture the philosophical stalemate of the Biblical figures, Moses and Aaron. Moses adheres to the unadorned Idea, conveyed exclusively through words. Aaron argues for the people's need for images; the golden Calf is a tool enabling the populace to grasp the concept of monotheism. The battle is between word and image, idea and form.
