Description: In the London of 1910, Mr. Banks, a rather exacting man, places an advertisement in the newspaper for a very strict governess. When his children, Jane and Michael, compose their own want ad, their father summarily tears it up and tosses the fragments into the fireplace. The pieces miraculously fly up the chimney and into the sky to be retrieved by the inimitable Mary Poppins. Arriving at the Banks' residence on a most propitious east wind, the extraordinary nannie amazes the children with her magical talents: transforming chores into games and loathesome tonics into wonderful elixirs. Out for a walk, they find Bert, the chimney sweep, making wondrous chalk drawings on the sidewalk. With help from Mary Poppins (and the magic of Disney animation), the group is transported to the world of make-believe. Jane and Michael ride merry-go-round horses which escape their carousel poles to take the children on a lively jaunt through the countryside. In addition to her fabulous feats of prestidigitation, Mary helps restore a warm and loving relationship between the children and their distant banker father. Director Stevenson's spirited narrative is further enhanced by lively musical numbers: Spoonful of sugar, Jolly holiday, I love to laugh, Chim-Chim-Cheree, Feed the birds (Tuppence a bag, Step in time, Stay awake, Sister Suffragette, A Man has dreams, The Life I lead, Let's go fly a kite, Fidelity Feduciary Bank, The Perfect nanny, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
