Map Skills: Understanding Latitude

Introduces and defines such terms as latitude, equator, and tropics and uses animation to trace the derivation of these terms. Demonstrates that parallels of latitude are numbered by determining the angle between the lines from the center of the earth to the point on the earth's surface and the equator. Shows that, in general, climate is similar in areas having the same latitude but it can be modified by ocean currents, mountain ranges, and other factors., Natalie Haymaker, an animated character, teaches the map skills using latitude and pointing out climates, degrees, and miles.
