Scola's whimsical historical pageant interweaves historical events and figures with humorous, pointed considerations of life, politics and the inevitability of change. As the French Revolution consumes the land, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette flee Paris to the town of Varennes in a vain attempt to escape execution.
