KTLA News: "Tom Bradley speaks to the press after returning from China" (1979)

[Hallway noise]. [Mayor Tom Bradley] ...those cuts. I don't know anything. [Hallway noise]. We were very well received both by the officials and the Chinese people. There is clearly a firm determination by the Chinese to establish strong ties of friendship with the United States. And every delegation... whether a group of educators, professional people, doctors,  lawyers, jurors or our first group of Mayors, has been very well received. They've attempted to show  us all sides of life in China. We were free to move about, to talk to people, to examine  for ourselves anything we wanted to see. [Hallway noise]. [Silence]. [Hallway noise]. [Reporters talking over one another asking Bradley questions]. [Unidentified Reporter] Tom, in representing the City of Los Angeles, what was the highlights of your trip to Red China? [Reporters talking over one another]. The thirteen mayors who represented the United States served as goodwill ambassadors and I think that our mission was accomplished. [Reporter talking to cameraman] Chuck, take my microphone. [Hallway noise]. 950 million people... [Bradley and reporters laugh]. and a similar number of bicycles. I've never seen so many bicycles in one place in  all my life that and the horns. [Unidentified Reporter] What was your impression the... [Unidentified Reporter]...the local business or the industry in and amongst the City of Los Angeles? No. The... trade relations will be  carried on by individual companies. There are a number of companies from the United States already  active in promoting their business connections. The Chinese did indicate to us that they're anxious  to have joint venture projects over there, to have American investments on their terms. They're anxious to secure American expertise, advice and assistance. They recognize that they are  not a self-sufficient nation. That they must  have help from abroad and they are for the first  time now reaching out for that kind of help. [Unidentified Reporter] Do you see some special advantage for the people of Los  Angeles in increased trade and contact with China? [Hallway noise]. Surely, Southern California and Los Angeles  will be foremost among those areas of this country where trade relations will take place. There are already a number of contracts and arrangements that have been made, others that  are underway and because Los Angeles and this region is closer to China than the rest of the  country it's in an ideal geographical spot for that kind of trade. [Unidentified Reporter] What's your reaction to across the board cutbacks in the City Council? [Hallway noise]. I have not enjoyed the luxury of hearing about or reading about... [Unidentified Reporter] You're  coming back to Los Angeles at a time when the City uh... [Reporter talking, unintelligible]. [Bradley] Wasn't my rubbish collection fee  that was a proposal before the City Council... [Hallway noise]. [Street noise].
