[Tom Bradley:] We have an unemployment rate which is at least 30, sometimes 50% among minority youth. These young people who don't have a job have no hope and they are going to survive somehow and that means that there's a direct connection between their unemployment and the fact they'll be involved in crime. I hope that the Congress will pass this bill and make possible the creation of millions of jobs in this country. [Stan Chambers:] ...very much. It was good there. Your colleagues let you down. [Bradley, quietly:] Strike two. Ball three! [yell from crowd] [unintelligible kids talking] [Bradley:] Strike three. You're out. The game is over. [Catcher:] We win. [Bradley:] [...] Counsel won. [kid cheers] [Man:] They always win. [Coach:] Let's give a cheer, you guys! Let's give 'em a cheer. Ready on three. One, two, three. [Kids cheer:] Two, four, six, eight, who do we appreciate? McCounsel [?], McCounsel, yay! [kids talking] [Chambers:] Mr. Mayor, what are the chances for a youth employment bill in Southern California? [Bradley:] Well, this bill now being considered by the Congress will greatly expand the youth employment program for the nation. ...the direct connection between unemployment and crime among youth. And certainly, if we put people to work, they're not going to be forced into a life of crime. [Chambers:] Are you optimistic? [Bradley:] I'm hopeful. I believe that the Congress ought to see the connection between need to reduce crime, a need to provide hope, and this bill which is now being pushed by the committee.
