KTLA News: "Tom Bradley holds press conference about replacing the Los Angeles Rams" (1978)

[No audio] [Mayor Tom Bradley] We talked about, certain steps that have already been undertaken. Others that will be started, both at the national level, with the introduction of, ah, a measure in the congress by Congresswoman, Yvonne Burke. Actions in the state legislature by ah, Assemblywoman Teresa Hughes. And a proposal by, Senator Dave Roberti, dealing with, the seventy five mile, ah, limit. With the antitrust aspects of, the prohibition against bringing another team, within that, ah, mileage, to the City of Los Angeles. [No audio] [Bradley] Let me set the stage for it and then we'll tell you exactly how we're gonna handle it. [Camera noise] [Bradley] Group representing the State, the County and the City of Los Angeles, has met for the purpose of developing some strategy as to how we're going to deal with the question of, finding a replacement football team, to play in the Los Angeles Coliseum. That stadium has been a source of pride and a great attraction, ah, to  this city for many years. The people of this city have strongly supported, football, both college and professional, for a long time. This kind of loyalty deserves the best from those of us who represent them. In terms of our effort to find a team, ah, that is commensurate with the prestige of this city, and what the people are entitled to. Of the name, Los Angeles, by the Anaheim Rams, as we understand it. And our objection to that, ah. Other steps that may be taken in the legislative fashion. The Coliseum Commission represented by Bill Robertson will tell you in a moment, what they plan to do at their meeting on Tuesday with regard to, [Camera noise] [Bradley] an alternate team into the Coliseum at the earliest possible stage. [Bradley] I think it's understandable we cannot disclose, [Bradley] names of any teams that have been contacted or will be contacted. [Bradley] Or whether we will [camera noise] simply live here. [Bradley] are going to be able to continue enjoying professional football right in our own backyard. [Bill Robertson, off camera] wednesday of the Coliseum Commission, [Robertson] I'm going to strongly recommend, [Robertson] that, [camera noise] to make it, [Robertson] attractive for, [Robertson] another professional team to come into the, [Robertson] City of Los Angeles. [Robertson] They have a, [Robertson] ah, professional football team and the college team to make that, [Robertson] area more attractive for the, [Robertson] people who, [camera noise] Teresa Hughes, [Robertson] and the message we got from Senator Dave Roberti today was supportive. [Robertson] And of course, the Mayor. [camera noise] [Reporter] You mentioned the courts and you mentioned the Congress. [Reporter] Wouldn't it perhaps be better to start a negotiation with a team, before throwing all the big guns at them right at the very start. [Bradley] You know, you have to get somebody's attention before you can really begin to get active. And the two by four of the Congress and the courts I think will get that attention. We want to deal in the most constructive and friendly fashion. But we want to deal from a position of strength and I think that, climate will be created by those actions.
