KTLA News: "State Senator James R. Mills and Tom Bradley promote Proposition 5" (1974)

[Ambient street, crowd noise] [Ambient street, crowd noise] [Mayor Tom Bradley] Welcome! [Applause] [Ca. State Senator, James R. Mills] Well, we started from Sacramento and rode to San Jose. The end of the, the end of the trail, of course is San Diego but we didn't have time to go all the way on our bikes. So, we rode the train from San Jose to Santa Barbara. We thought that was quite appropriate and symbolic because one of the things we hope for from Proposition 5 is, a better rail system and higher speed trains between the cities, in addition to rapid transit systems. The, ah, interest has been quite great. We're publicizing Proposition 5, and, we're using the bicycles as the symbol, you know, we think, we think bikes are a sane way to travel around and, ah, that's an appropriate symbol for what we consider to be a saner transportation policy. And that's what we want to get out of Proposition 5. [Ambient street noise] [Bradley] Good. [Ambient street noise] [Partially unintelligible comments] No idea. [Mills] All right. [Garten] Senator, how far have you ridden? What does it look like as far as what your, [Garten] Is it inconvenient? Do you stay at motels? What do you do at night? [Mills] No, we've been staying in YMCAs mostly, and, ah, everybody sleeping on the mats. [Garten] You feel you're accomplishing your purpose? [Mills] Yes, I do. I do. We've, [Mills] been doing very well. We normally, when I'm acting governor, I am in constant touch with the governor's office and I am now. [Mills] So that if anything were required it could be done at once. So, [Mills] we have a state policeman along. The governor always has guards where ever he is, and, including, when it's, [Mills] when it's I. [Mills] So, ah, he's in radio touch and, ah, [Mills] the time for, [Mills] me to act as governor, is probably no longer than if I were in Sacramento. [Garten] Senator, does your commitment to this measure, have anything to do with the fact that, [Ambient street noise] [Ambient street noise] [Applause] [Bradley] Did the wind blow you in, or, [Mills laughs] You look beautiful. You should have been with us. We didn't have to pay part of the way. [Mills] Ghosted. [Bradley] I must say, we, we brought in a beautiful day for you. [Mills] You did indeed. [Bradley] I want to welcome all of you to, Los Angeles and commend you for this, [Bradley] great idea, drawing attention to Proposition 5. I think that, [Bradley] the people of this state are now prepared to really provide us with some financial means of, [Bradley] balancing our transportation approaches and, [Bradley] to not rely solely upon the automobile and our, [Bradley] freeways and great network of roads. [Bradley] Ah, mass public transportation is absolutely essential as, [Camera noise] [Mills] or any other problems. [Bradley] Yes. [Mills] All of us can help. [Bradley] Well, we're working mighty hard on it and I think that we're gonna get our message across. It's, ah, [Bradley] I think, the opposition which we've had in the past, simply is not going to be there this time. [Bradley] The energy crisis has clearly dramatized the need for, [Bradley] a new approach. An alternative that this ballot measure will open up for us. [Mills] Right. I agree.
