KTLA News: "Mayor Tom Bradley’s press conference on resignation of Andrew Young" (1979)

[Room noise]. [Mayor Tom Bradley] I think what needs to be emphasized at  this point is that the strong bond, the friendship and support between the Jewish  community and the black community in this country has a long and historical base  and that kind of friendship which has been demonstrated over and over again, while  it may have had some ups and downs, has never reached the point where it appeared that there  was any serious prospect for any break in those relationships and I do not anticipate that  there's going to be any break at this time. [Low, muffled audio]. [Room noise]. Morning. [Room noise]. Can we wait just a moment? Everybody ready? [Room noise]. This thing working alright? Working now? [Room noise] Ambassador Andrew Young placed a conference call to six mayor's- Mayor of Detroit Coleman Young, New York Ken Gibson, Maynard Jackson of Atlanta, Georgia, Dutch Morial of New Orleans, Lionel Wilson of Oakland and myself- the purpose of the conference call  was to explain to us the circumstances of his resignation, uh...to clarify for us in order that we  may hopefully clarify to our constituents the fact that he made a decision...a personal decision to resign. That there was no pressure whatsoever from the White House, from the State Department, from  any organization to ask for that resignation. He felt that he had reached the point where he  could be more effective in expressing some points of view that were restricted by virtue  of administration policy or foreign policy and...for these and for a variety of reasons, he made the  decision to resign. He wanted it made very clear the he still strongly supports President Carter,  will campaign for him and will do everything within his power to assist in his re-election  efforts and thirdly he expressed some concern that we get a message out to our constituents in  order that there not be misunderstandings that would generate any schism between the black  and Jewish communities across this country. [Room noise]. [Reporter Stan Chambers] Mayor Bradley... what reaction do you have to Senator Cranston  saying that you should be his successor? Alan Cranston is my friend, at least I thought he was. [Audience laughter]. [Unidentified Reporter] Would you be interested in this post Mayor? Because not only... [Room noise]. Show me which members of my staff and... [Bradley and audience laughs]. and they'll be on their way. I have...I have not had a call,  any comment from the White House and that's where that appointment and invitation  for appointment will be made. It would be presumptuous for me to respond to someone  who doesn't have the authority to make such a proposal. [Reporter Stan Chambers] What was you reaction when your friend Senator Cranston said that? [Room noise]. I was surprised when I heard the word that he had made such a statement, pleased that he  has that kind of regard for me and I thank him. [Unknown Reporter] Mr. Mayor, are you uh...concerned that there is a... [Unknown Reporter]...as result of his resignation? [Silence]. ...high marks. I think that the...the record is  very clear as to his performance and the contributions which he has made in many ways and to now look back on any one or several statements or actions on his part and make  a judgement about him, I not going to do that. [Unknown Reporter] Despite the fact that Ambassador Young resigned, it used to be... [Bradley] ...that... [Silence]. [Room noise].
