KTLA News: "Mayor Tom Bradley holds press conference on contract negotiations for city employees"

[Mayor Tom Bradley] I want to indicate to any other employee organization, that if they desire to, leave the fact-finding process and come back to the table, ah, to discuss a similar kind of proposal that we are approving today. [Coughing off camera] Ah, we'll be pleased to entertain those discussions. And I certainly would be happy to, ah, urge the committee and the council to, ah, seriously, ah, ah, discuss and consider, ah, such a proposal. I'm very pleased, John, to sign this ordinance and get this one behind us. [Pen scratching] [Reporter, unintelligible] [Bradley] Oh, yeah. [No audio] [Bradley] Negotiations with all of the employee organizations, in the city of Los Angeles. We reached settlement with most of them. There are some which are still, at impasse. And we have therefore gone to fact-finding. Major breakthrough was made when the fact-finder reported out the, negotiations and the proposed contract with the Police Protective League, representing the captains and other higher, ah, ranks in the police department. It essentially is nine percent in, wages, and the same fringe benefits, health, dental, and some special time off, ah, for seminars for them. It's similar to the other fringes, that other employee organizations have been offered. This is essentially the package which was on the table for every employee group in the city, in June of this year. And we're pleased that the police captains and higher ranks, ah, have overwhelmingly approved this recommendation from the fact-finder. And today, the City Council has approved, ah, this contract. And, I'm, ah, here to congratulate, John Farrar and the members of the City Council for what I think was a fair, ah, wage settlement. What I think is a major break, [camera noise] [Camera noise] and has considered that this is a fair settlement. And therefore recommended it to us. Ah, we have had this offer on the table as I indicated since June for every employee group. In fact, every union representative knew in April of this year when the budget was presented that there was money in there that would take care of a nine percent pay increase. And we have been, ah, diligent in our efforts to try to reach, ah, settlement with the employee representatives. And when we reached impasse and couldn't agree. We asked and suggested, that, ah, the matter be submitted to fact-finding and that process is now underway, with those employee groups which have not yet settled. Um, we, ah, we think that it, it does represent, ah, a fair wage offer. It's, ah, in the same context as other, wage settlements that have been approved all across the country. Both in private industry, as well as governmental agencies. [Reporter] Now, you're referring to it as a major breakthrough, [Camera noise]
