KTLA News: "Dick Garten interviews candidate Tom Bradley about potential advisory committee" (1973)

[Dick Garten] Councilman, a Blue Ribbon committee has... [Garten] Councilman, do you have commitments from outstanding citizens for an advisory  committee in the event of your election? [Tom Bradley] I have some of the commitments already of the two people who've agreed to serve as co-chairmen, join me today for the purpose of saying that they will serve. I believe that with the Watergate matter, with corruption and the kind of things happening all over the country at every level of government, people have been turned off. They've lost confidence in government. I'd like to see us begin to restore that sense of confidence and establishing a committee that will help in the selection of the people who are going to run this city with me, I think will be one of the ways to do it. The committee would be broadly based but it would be chaired by such people as Victor Carter who is an outstanding businessman and former city commissioner, by Father Charles Cassasa, the chancellor of Loyola University. There will be others, but it is that kind of committee, and that kind of respect that I think will help me in selecting the people who have real competence to serve as commissioners for this city. [Garten] How large do you see that committee, sir? [Bradley] My guess is it will be somewhere between 15 and 20 people. [Garten] Councilman, the debates, so-called  debates have gotten kind of low. What do you plan as far as that's concerned? [Bradley] I hope that my opponent will join me, but if he doesn't, I'll tell you now that I'm going to do it unilaterally. [Garten] One other point and that is the question of deputies, female deputies, in your office. There is some confusion as to whether you do or do not have any. [Bradley] Yes, what, two weeks ago I had two women, today I have one. What we describe as deputies, or people who are not just secretaries, the people who handle complaints, who go out into the field or who can deal with the public, have sometimes been called administrative aides, and that's the title that one woman now has on my staff. But they are in effect, the deputy councilman. They can take care of complaints and handle the problems that I will not be able to handle because of a lack of time. [Garten] They are an extension of your arms and eyes and ears. [Bradley] That's exactly it. [Bradley] And that the title is really not the important factor, it's the job they do. [Garten] Thank you.
