Description: Dating to the early 1970s and shot by an unknown tourist using Orwo 8mm film, this home movie shows views of Kiev, Ukraine during the Cold War. It includes shots of the Red University Building, principal and oldest 4-story building of the Kyiv University at (:21), with a banner of Lenin visible on the front. It also contains shots of various churches including St. Volodymyr’s (1:11) as well as a scenic viewing area of the Dnieper River and the famed pedestrian bridge, one of the symbols of the city of Kyiv (2:06). At (2:48), young people parade with Socialist banners. These are likely members of the youth division of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union or Komsomol. At (3:13), young sailors walk past the cameraman. At (3:37) an eternal flame burns at the obelisk, a memorial built in 1957 to commemorate WWII losses. At (4:02) a military parade. At (4:30) a view of Maidan Nezalezhosti or Independence Square. The Expocenter of Ukraine (6:37). At (7:01) an exhibition of farm or agricultural equipment.
