Description: The centerpiece of this reel is colorful and kinetic documentation of the 1978 San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on Market Street in San Francisco, with a wide array of perspectives and objectives on display in graphics, signage, and costumery, all cohering around the ongoing fight for visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ people. Shows an exuberant Harvey Milk participating in what would be his last parade. Noe Valley Street Fair on 24th Street and also footage of police in riot gear at the Palace of Fine Arts, including news media personnel and equipment of the era. Much of the signage within the parade makes reference to the Briggs Initiative, which was a state proposition on the ballot in 1978 that would have prohibited lesbian and gay people from teaching in the public schools. The complete reel includes a family Christmas celebration at a residence outside of San Francisco, with family affection, a child dancing, and footage apparently showing a marijuana crop harvest laid out on a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle. It also includes neighborhood family scenes in San Francisco with a young couple enjoying Dolores Park with their dog.
