Description: Illustrates the stages by which young children learn to understand, use, read and write their native language. Points out how learning language begins with listening, and how the child's response indicates his desire to take a larger part in the family. Explains that earliest talk concerns first-hand experience, but that at about the age of three the child begins to use words about things not present and about events of the past or future. Shows how speech becomes internalized verbal thinking by the age of seven or eight.
