Dinosaurs' Dilemma: The Meaning of the Variable

Introduces the concept of variables in mathematical statements through an animated fable about a dinosaur's "coming of age" test. Illustrates the characteristics of a variable by showing that the statement 2 + x = 5 is neither true nor false but that its validity depends upon the value substituted for "x." Evokes student reaction to a closing sentence containing a variable.
