COLORADO LAND OF THE LONG LOOK

This travelogue portrays the diverse landscapes of the state of Colorado while simultaneously promoting Kodak photography products. The film was produced by Eastman Kodak Co. in 1971 in concert with the State of Colorado Traveler and Business Bureau, and narrated by Rex Allan. An accompany book was also published at the time of the film's release. The movie includes extensive footage of everything from snowy mountaintops to sand dunes in the desert, displaying many outdoor activities both locals and visitors can enjoy when exploring the nature of Colorado. The film leads with a busy gas station, as an attendant is busy filling gas tanks and performing oil checks on the many cars, including a VW Beetle (00:08). Gas is .40 per gallon! A van exits the gas station (01:06) and continues on the highway (01:36). Cowboys travel by foot across the flat of the land (01:59). Families and friends on vacation (02:15). "The Rocky Mountains" mountain range (02:53). A migrating herd of sheep crosses the road (03:08). Motorcycles riders chose the adventurous path up the mountains (03:32). Close-up footage of leaves and flowers (04:28). Visitors are taking photos to remember their experiences (04:56). Birds and deers in their habitat (05:34). The San Juan National Park (07:26). [Music] why i need her uh i fill up with regular checkpoints 349. how many miles from denver right now fifty-five wouldn't get to colorado and we will get to utah places like that god knows if we'll ever make it we might head down towards colorado springs they say there's some nice mountains down there i went through aspen on my way to chicago just to see it i just fell in love with it the country was so pretty we'll stay there we can find jobs i love the mountains and the pictures you can get up there are great i see something about the mountains i guess clouds blue sky the sky is always blue we rode up in the mountains for about oh an hour or two or something i don't know we just slept out right on the sides we made steaks there and crummy coffee and everything else it was really good the most fantastic state i've ever been in [Music] across the great flat of the land across the desert and the open plains they come from the beehives of the east the woodlands of the northwest they come to visit to make a home to capture the beauty in the grandeur which is uniquely colorado they've been making the trip for years back around 1859 it was to find gold today they come to find more room and breathe clean air people come to colorado for a vacation to throw snowballs in july and relive their fun in december and some come just because it's here whatever the reasons the people of colorado and those who visit find it all here from denver to durango grand junction to colorado springs the variety of scenery is endless colorado is the outdoors the visitor's first thought is to see the rockies driving is an easy way [Applause] occasionally you might have to share the road with a migrating herd of sheep [Music] you for these mountain trails but the scenery makes it all worthwhile the young at heart go on two wheels [Music] though not for everyone cycling through the mountains can be an exciting way to see them we're about 20 miles outside of aspen going over independence pass elevation 12 000 feet [Music] so so you've seen some of the bigness of it all but what about the little things the intimate personal glimpses the very fabric of a great state viewed up close [Music] you can capture some of this other world through the eye of your camera take it back with you to remember and share with those who haven't been here yet [Music] so [Music] [Applause] so [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] so [Music] so the beauty of colorado changes with every season wildflowers in the spring gold and aspen in the fall indian summer lingers from late september into november in the san juan national forest we're on the road from rico to telluride which winds through lizard head past for a broader look at the san juan mountains some folks fly through them [Music] nature carved these red rock cathedral spires and formed what is aptly named the garden of the gods just outside colorado springs it's what some call a unique geological phenomenon it's also a good place to take unusual pictures [Applause] [Music] nearly 800 years ago about 1200 a.d this was home for some 250 indians they built it stone by stone but lived here only about 100 years mysteriously they left and moved south to what is now new mexico and arizona 60 or 70 years later the utes and the navajos came upon these cliff dwellings but they chose not to move in they probably feared the ghosts of the former occupants it wasn't until the 16th century that this man-made wonder got a name spanish explorers passing through called it mesa verde which means green table [Music] this is cliff palace the largest dwelling in the complex it became a national park in 1906. today you can enjoy the green table and let your imagination carry you back to the days when indian life was basic revolving around the simple elements of pure air water earth and fire there are still a few men around who remember colorado's frontier days the changes in conflict the shaping of the land well when i first come into this part of the country was pretty rough when those miners come to town was plenty rough as i remember this happened way back in the early 1905 or 1906 when the miners had to go into the mountains and stay in there and fall till spring the ways of getting in and out was too rough and the snow was too deep when they did come to town why they uh put on a quite a show as these two men come down from their winters out in the mines why they met up in drago i guess over a few drinks probably at the bar and had in got into a squabble over this fancy lady and they uh just shot it out there on the street right in front of the old wesley helen barber shop which is the sanitary barber shop now [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] this [Music] john [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] that's about how it used to be when they discovered gold in these hills people say there's still plenty to be had some think even more than was ever taken out but the price of gold will have to go a lot higher before prospecting becomes popular again gold panning today is more for pleasure than profit there are hundreds of storybook streams from creek to urane on these clear waters flowed the dreams of many who searched for that elusive bright metallic dust the evidence of colorado's mining history is still here traces of fortunes made and lost the names themselves are a legacy from colorado's past names like last chance smuggler tomboy neglected little dora all silent now the setting offers more in photography than it does in precious metals mining is still an important industry in colorado but now it's carried on with tools few prospectors could imagine let alone afford from deep inside bulldog mountain comes ore containing silver lead and zinc after drilling and blasting the broken rock is scraped to a vertical tunnel and dropped into ore cars waiting below then it's about a two mile trip to daylight and the processing plant [Music] [Applause] the modern home stake silver mine overlooks picturesque cree famous for mining since eighteen ninety [Music] a conveyor belt carries the coarse ore to the mill where an operator removes any material that might damage the crushers the ore is tumbled rolled and ground up to 300 tons are processed daily it takes about a ton of ore to produce 18 ounces of silver after concentrating and smelting one of the end products is silver ingots hidden deep in the earth silver can also be found above ground as a prize for spending a few seconds on a bucking horse [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] uh [Music] so [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] so it must be the same feeling of escape that draws a man to explore one more canyon and climb one more mountain [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] ah so [Music] bye [Music] [Applause] we're on a float trip down the green river you can take one to five days and travel 15 to 85 miles and sometimes it can get exciting among all the attractions in colorado pike's peak stands out as a favor after zebu i try it under your own power and if you're in a hurry and happen to be a professional driver there's the pikes peak auto hill climb [Music] every fourth of july late model stock cars and racers compete against the clock for prize money it's a twisting curving 12 and a half mile course which provides plenty of spectator thrills [Music] [Music] [Applause] what do you do when you get to the top turn around and go back down [Music] so [Music] from thanksgiving through may colorado is ski country over 30 areas to choose from skiing for the most advanced and for those just starting to find out what sliding down a snowy mountain is all about [Music] so here's one of the biggest sand piles in the country 57 square miles 700 feet high it was carried here by the wind and trapped by the sangre de cristo mountains there are no trails in the great sand dunes national monument you can walk anywhere um [Music] foreign colorful colorado and we're taking fond looks at what we must now leave the american indians call colorado the land of the long look and whether it's colorado or anyplace else a camera allows you to take that long and lasting look wherever and whenever you wish [Music] so [Music] you
