Description: Clarence, a black 12-year-old from a family of migrant workers, goes to school for the first time in New York City. Although bright, he cannot read or write and reacts furiously when the other students taunt him. Exiled to the hall for his behavior, Clarence meets Angel, a hyperactive, wildly imaginative Puerto Rican boy who completes his assignments so fast that he becomes restless and unruly. Clarence and Angel become friends and Angel takes the responsibility of teaching Clarence how to read. (Circulates)
