Covers the disintegration of the Han empire, the formation of new dynasties, and new developments in religion and art (220 A.D. to 581 A.D.) through a variety of artifacts, documents, and art materials. Explains that after the Han dynasty China was divided into three kingdoms--Wu, Shu-Han, and Wei--but warring among them decimated the population and the emperor allowed non-Chinese tribes inside the Great Wall. Observes the evolution of the empire into the era called Northern and Southern Dynasties (386-589 A.D.) and compares the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism.
