Description: Presents two basic approaches to urban development--a city developed from a master plan where no city existed before as evidenced in Brasilia and redevelopment of an older city to meet the demands of modern urban living as seen in Philadelphia. Garry Moore, television personality, serves as moderator in exploring the question of an expanding trend in urban development with architects, city planning specialists, and social scientists. Brasilia's success is attributed to the dynamic leadership behind its construction and the fact that it is a national capital. Philadelphia, however, exhibits characteristics of a once well planned city that has been allowed to deteriorate. Philadelphia's redevelopment plans are outlined and reactions of citizens living in these affected areas are examined. Stresses that cities can be greatly improved with the engineering skills and the resources now available, but public cooperation is essential to the successful redevelopment. Future architectural developments for urban areas are suggested.
