Subjects Gleason, Kate, 1865-1933 Content Description Film features Beaufort, S.C., Datha/Dataw Island picnic, East Rochester, and a station wagon trip to Ireland and France. Footage shows a boat, possibly Kate Gleason's boat, 'Eleanor of the Isles,' (a former rumrunner purchased out of confiscation in Florida), passengers on board, a house on a dirt track, African American children dancing, dockside shots, horse riding, rural train tracks, buildings, garden scenes, various shots of people. Shots of two men outside the First National Bank in East Rochester, one of them may be possibly Harry C. Eyer. A family with two small children. Women leaving a brick building. A woman in silk pajamas smoking a cigarette is at Clones, Gleason's East Rochester home. People eating fruit from the trees in a garden. Then a trip overseas with the station wagon and shots of Ireland and France and on board a ship. Shots of Ireland show the cottages and people of County Tipperary, country lanes, Drumnahane Castle. Shots of France show castle and chateau, with Kate and others walking in and out of shot, a Joan of Arc equestrian statue in a town square, gypsy caravans and families gathered, and the station wagon parked on a street. She left Dataw to her secretary Elizabeth Sanders, who married Richard H. Rowland in 1936. These films were shot possibly by Kate Gleason, one of her brothers, Elizabeth Sanders or Richard H. Rowland and show Gleason’s family and friends, both in South Carolina and Rochester, New York in the late 1920s to the early 1930s, and trips abroad to Ireland, France and Germany.
