Subjects Gleason, Kate, 1865-1933 Content Description Film features Beaufort, S.C., Penn School and Datha/Dataw Island, ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) picnic and Power conference. Footage shows: a snowy scene with a woman in a fur coat and a large car, the woman walks towards a large house (Kate Gleason's house Clones in East Rochester). People outside the house, in street scenes, outside a gas station in East Rochester. Scenes of a garden at the Penn School (now the Penn Center, St. Helena Island, S.C. Kate Gleason was a benefactor of the Penn School). Sound newsreel truck in the foreground (RCA PhiloPhone), people gathered for an event, a Ford Model A Tudor (license plate SC CX 45 24), family on a picnic in the gardens. Scenes on a dockside, views from the boat, people disembarking, going to and from Dataw Island, at the beach, Kate’s sister Eleanor walking on the beach. Plantation house with cottages, farmworkers, fishing, etc. Older women pose by a large car. More shots of a boat ride. Street scenes of East Rochester, with views of cars, telegraph poles and street lamps. Kate Gleason gets out of a car and shown walking. Scenes at a train station, porter brings bags, people board train. Shots outside large plantation house, a car, possibly a 1928 Lincoln L series limousine, and outbuildings. Shots on a dockside or on a boat, deckchairs and water in background. Shots on a cruise ship/on board a large boat. Street scenes from Munich. Hotel Bayerischer Hof in background, Bavaria Statue, Bavarian Army Museum (now the Bavarian State Chancellery), then shots of Septmonts, France, castle ruins. Scenes at end of film in a garden/park with picnic tables near a lake. This picnic could be an ASME picnic that Kate threw for the group when they had a meeting in Rochester, NY on May 13, 1929. Digital Collection Home Movies from Moving Image Research Collections Collection Name Gleason Collection Collection Description Home movies of Kate Gleason, engineer and business woman, and owner of Dataw Island near Beaufort, South Carolina from the 1920s until her death in 1933. She left Dataw to her secretary Elizabeth Sanders, who married Richard H. Rowland in 1936. These films were shot possibly by Kate Gleason, one of her brothers, Elizabeth Sanders or Richard H. Rowland and show Gleason’s family and friends, both in South Carolina and Rochester, New York in the late 1920s to the early 1930s, and trips abroad to Ireland, France and Germany.
