The plant was two miles distant from the de la Cova home. The explosions started at 9:28 AM due to mechanical failure in a compressor in the reactor system and ended at 5:45 PM. Mushroom clouds of black smoke towered into the air that could be seen twenty miles away. The plant was levelled at a cost of $50 million. Twelve workers died and 70 were injured of the 850 who were on the day shift. It was one of the deadliest industrial disasters in modern American history. Home. The films depict travels across America and significant events in the lives of his family and friends whilst living in Louisville, Ky. and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
